Fallen off the wagon... I need help be brutal

Hi everyone, haven't been on here for so long which is ridiculous really.

Well I have fallen off the wagon, I have been eating all sorts of junk. I seem to have lost my way. I have an ok level of restriction although I do sometimes eat past that. Silly really or I just take an hour and carry on eating. Which is a definite no no as I should stop after 20 bites and 20 mins I still remember the rules.

I am lucky that I haven't put weight on but I haven't lost any either. Im very active and used to loose steadily I did have a stall and think this pushed me over the edge and made me forget my way.

The saddest part is that now I'm over a year out and although I have done well I could have achieved so much more. I should and could have lost more I know that.

My dietitian suggested a face to face appointment and maybe a small fill. Which I have booked and cancelled twice!! WHAT is wrong with me!!

Also this is my biggest confession.... I have discovered chocolate!! in a big way and I have never liked chocolate. I would prefer a bag of chips or a greggs but I cant manage those so have moved on. I ate 3 snickers in 3 hours the other day and spent the whole night on the loo!! its pathetic why do i do it to myself. I think the only reason I haven't gained is because I am very active and I eat small portions (obviously) so when I eat the wrong things I am only eating a small amount of them. I need a kick start and would love to lose another couple of stone. Even if it was just 1 I would be happy.

I eat small meals and then snack snack snack Ill eat a tiny lunch feel full and then get it into my head I haven't eaten enough and then have a chocolate.

For instance yesterday I ate,

No brekkie ( I cant eat it)

Lunch I had a few mouths of mushroom risotto not a lot as was horrible

half a scone with butter and jam

dinner a jacket spud with cheese a fair bit i might add

chicken portion (tiny amount)

lots of coffee with 1 sugar in each

small choclate caramel bar

a chocolate tea cake

The day before

No brekkie ( i cant eat it)

3 chicken selects from mcdonalds (ate 2 i think) & cheese dippers ate 2 plus the dip

dinner cottage pie

Chrisps and a snicker

again lots of coffee and ribena with sugar

Friday

No brekkie

Lunch Mini fish and chips ( ate all the fish probably 3 chips)

dinner - sausage and mash. managed 3 sausages with the help of my dog so who knows what i ate.

a big bar of galaxy

monster munch x 2

Thursday

no brekkie

lunch 2 x toast which I ate in 2 sittings

bar of galaxy cookie crumble

dinner Chinese.... i had a chicken and mushroom curry with chips had 5 chips max and ate the onion and mushroom out of the curry and proabably 2 bits of chicken.

I love salad I love veg I love fruit I just don't bother. Its a busy time at work Im doing a huge amount of hours. However I have all the major supermarkets within 5 mins drive and I can pop out of work whenever so not really a good excuse there!

Help please xxx

Turned down for private sleeve op!

Have been emailing a clinic in Czech to carry out gastric sleeve surgery and they have declined due to my medication and high bmi. Very disappointed to say the least.

Turned down for private sleeve op!

Journey back to SLIM ME..

Im starting my diary with the intention it will give me a positive and uplifting wait till my surgery and to keep me motivated.

In brief as a few of you know i started my journey into weight loss surgery recommended by my GP back in January 2013 due to on going health problems such as dangerously high blood pressure, a thyroid problem ,migraine depression , thrombocytes. and the apperance of new issues such as sleep apnoea and the onset of diabetes .I was apprehensive at first but thought I had to do this for my health first.

For over twenty years suffered with weight issues however was a very slim child with believe it or not eating disorder.. which rectified it self as I turned into adolesence. Weight gain then started and I grew and grew....so back to the future Im on my way to surgery after so many going around and around through loop holes ete etc .

My surgery (if nothing changes/cancelled or nothing holds up my op ) is 27th November 2014.

I must admit my eating is so out of control and infact im just greedy. Since being on weight management course i lost nearly a stone and 5 Ibs. I have put back on a stone...I start my preop diet Oct 30th and i have to lose between 5 and 10 % weight loss otherwise my surgery will be cancelled!!! I would be devastated. I have been trying to cut down and trying to do days on one or the other diets offered on the pre-op diet .I get to the afternoon eveing very well then BANG!! i go and stuff everything in my mouth ...this has got to stop and wondering if i will lose this weight and how am I going to do the LSD ...i know you are prob saying for goodness sake women get a grip..you have come along way.By the way Im keeping a food diary in order to see whats happening along side my mood at time etc as shown in the weight management class...come on guys am I going to this??? ALL help very much appreciated ....My affirmation I keep saying to my self is can you do this???... "YEs I can , YES I CAN , YES I CAN " (taken from the film NUTTY PROFESSOR)

Journey back to SLIM ME..

The Wait.....

So.... I had my pre-op week ago last Saturday, however I have no actual date for surgery.

I am now finding myself texting home everymorning my OH is at home asking if the postie has been.

Just wondering is it normal for to have pre-op before the date?

xx

Starting Today

Hi.

Today, after some considerable perseverance on my part, my GP agreed to refer me for possible surgery. One more appointment with her, then the real work starts.

Following post natal complications, I was an extremely thin child at a time when chubby kids were expected, so I was encouraged to 'Eat Up' at every opportunity. That was fine until my late teens when I went past sensible weight, and steadily put it on at a rate of about 2kg a year.

The prospect of a band or the chop is daunting, but everything else has failed, so it's time to bite the bullet

Bye bye to the Black Cardi!

Hi all, been reading loads of your diaries and loved them! Now that my op is booked I decided it's time to start one too! I'm making a promise 2 myself to update my diary daily and help others as much as possible. So Hello all! Xx

Bye bye to the Black Cardi!

Op date... Hooray..

Want to scream from the roof tops.. Hospital just rang and op is booked for 17th October.. I am in shock but so happyyyyyyyyyyyyy xxxxxx

My little corner

Got banded yesterday and just wanted to set up my own little thread to remind myself of why I'm doing this and track my progress.

I want to-

Be able to turn over in bed at night in one slick movement and not have to properly propel myself into position.

Get my hair cut without having to endure and hour of trying to avoid seeing myself in the mirror. Those capes aren't flattering with a double (or triple!) chin.

Be able to shop somewhere other than Evans. I bought PJs for my op on Thursday night and felt like telling the sales girl that it's going to be my last time giving them any of my money for quite a while. I have so many clothes I want to slim my way through.

Spot having to hide the fact that I'm constantly breathless.

Lose enough weight to stop the fertility problems I've been having or at least get to the stage where, if I need intervention, my BMI won't keep me from treatment.

Not always be the fattest person in the room.

So that's it. Not a big ask really

My little corner

Hello! Banded yesterday.

Just wanted to join for some support and advice.

Had my band fitted yesterday and got home this morning. So far, I've had some water, a tiny amount of orange juice and about an eggcup full of very watery cauliflower soup. Not even in the mood for food for the first time in my life.

Pain is manageable. Sneezing/coughing/yawning leaves me clutching at my stomach and wind pain in shoulder is coming and going.

I have two weeks off work and haven't told anyone apart from my husband about the surgery so looking forward to lying low for a bit and getting my bearings.

Hello! Banded yesterday.

A call to caution

This is just a note of interest not s criticism of anyone, anything just a warning from my own experience that could be useful.

What do you do when you are so far out (5.5 years), have had no support from your privately funded team and now feel lost and alone? I’ve tried with forums, tried really hard but the ‘well researched’ newcomers or those who have had no problems are so ready to claim their expert status based solely on their experience they decry anything you post. Up until 5 years out I had 2 years when I lost slowly but eventually after a great deal of effort managed to exceed 100% EWL. So I underwent plastics, fortunately able to fund myself and very pleased. I really thought aged 57 this was it, a good few decades to actually enjoy and live a normal life, giving many thanks to the bypass. Wrong - years 3 to 5 what a struggle, regain, loss, regain. Demonstrating my head was not in remotely the right zone. Cue over £2500 on private CBT – little to no help. Then bolt from the blue developed a major problem with weight loss, it shot off me like no tomorrow enough to send me from 12 stone down to under 9 in weeks. Investigated for everything but no answers.

The answer came very fortunately but totally randomly, nothing at all to do with many expensive consultations with my team who really couldn’t care less. Yes it wasn’t eventually diagnosed as your wls problem but they made no attempt to refer me on or even consider what to do next. My cousin (a maxio-facillo surgeon herself) was very worried by all this as we are very close. She mentioned, when doing a stint as a visiting lecturer at the hospital in Stockholm, to the maxfax team there how worried she was about me at lunch one day and stated that there had been no problems with the bypass other than finding massive ovarian cysts. This was overheard by a gynaecological professor there and she sought my cousin out to get more details. These were that ovarian cysts were found during the bypass op and were described by the wls surgeon operating as ‘massive’. Gynaecologist consulted at that time said to forget about it I was menopausal and they would shrivel and die. Well oh no they didn’t. In fact it transpired after I was seen in Stockholm that they became very much alive and were eating me away from the inside as they sought to keep their blood supply etc going. Once seen by the team in Sweden who are experts in this rare event the general opinion was I would have died within weeks if not found and treated. I have now had 2 major ops in Sweden and am recovering well, albeit at a great cost, to date in excess of £50,000.

This is a bit rambling but I am getting to the point. As I developed a problem everyone first wanted to locate it within weight loss surgery, had it gone wrong? Well I was a text book case until 5 years did better than expected but also suffered from problems with regain. How was anyone to know what was wrong was not wls based, they asked in hindsight. My problem seemed to be that anyone who was connected with wls didn’t want to refer me on to other departments even privately they stood within their own speciality and had no interest outside of that. Other specialities felt wls was bound to be the problem where excessive loss or gains were recorded. So when I suddenly lost weight, which would have been a marker for alarm in non-wls folk, in my case it wasn’t, arguments were my bypass was surely working well again. By chance I found the right team and the right answers but will others be so lucky? The point of this post is to say is if you have problems yes investigate the wls connection but please do not leave it there. If you still have problems insist your wls team or their consultants don’t leave it there, if you still have problems insist on further referrals or investigations. I stupidly didn’t, yet my unique circumstances (cousin etc, ) saved me, without them I would be dead. We see lots of posts about not letting your weight define you can I add in don’t let your weight loss surgery define you either. It is not the reason for every post op problem you may face and don’t let anyone tell you it is.

Trouble eating

Hi all,

I've been having trouble eating the last few days.

I had a peice of chicken on Thursday lunchtime which I think I tried to eat too quickly, I could almost feel it where I assume my pouch is.

Since then I've had 2 beef salads, a homemade stew and 2 sausages which have all been ready hard to eat. I've struggled getting the food down, it's felt like its stuck, and I've felt sick.

However I've also managed to have a weatabix with milk, some fruit, and a snack a jack - which were all fine.

I'm being extra careful to eat small mouthfuls and taking time between each mouthful now, so it's not that that's causing the problems.

Any ideas?

Lighten Period (Sorry TMI)

I am scheduled for surgery on Tuesday I come on my period yesterday and it's a little heavy due to my PCOS, I spoke to my advisor and she said it will be fine and probably be going by Tuesday. My periods are so unpredictable sometimes I'm on heavy for a week.

Would it be okay for me to take ibuprofen to lighten it a little?

I have heard that a lot of people have been on their period whilst having surgery but I would need to take a urine test on the morning of surgery and it's gone to be embarrassing as it will basically be the same colour as blood.

Please give me some advice, I've waited so long for this to happen and now the time is finally here something has to happen.

Fellow sleevers- meeting to discuss experiences?

I am due to get sleeved on 7th November. As time ticks by I am getting increasingly apprehensive, and it would be really useful to have a chat with someone who has gone through the procedure beforehand. If anyone fancies meeting for a coffee, I'd very much appreciate the opportunity. I am based near Mansfield, but quite happy to travel 30/40 miles. Also work in the NE frequently, if any sleevers are around there. Please PM me if interested.

The Extra Stomach

Hi Ladies and Gents...

Just a quick question, when you have the RNY - they make a small pouch from your tummy and staple the line off and then direct the end part of your intestine onto the new pouch, and the other part of the intestine with the stomach on is attached to the bottom of the intestine again, so does that mean your stomach just floats about in your abdomen? How does it work? Can someone tell me if i have confused myself completely?

Thanks,

Hayley:p

Is 2 much the same as 1?

Hello all,

We have a cute westie called Lucia. When we got her we lived next door to 2 other dogs & they all played together daily & we walked together all the time.

We have since moved & are more rural so no neighbourly dogs & I am convinced Lucia is lonely, so I thought about getting another dog but husband says no as it would make life harder.

I'm not convinced, well apart from the fees of having them looked after while we go away going up but other than that surely it would be better for lucia?

But if I don't get to get another dog has anyone got any tips for keeping her happy & not lonely? She is with me for the majority of the day anyway but I still worry.

No weight loss? Feeling down

My weight loss has pretty much stopped, my measurements seem to be decreasing but weight loss is pretty much non existent. I'm just over 2 weeks post op with my gastric sleeve and I'm wondering if anyone else had this or is it normal or not? I'm obviously on a liquid diet and only eating around 500 or less calories per day and walking more than usual.

Here we go....

Well, where to start........

I have been reading many of the posts for the past few weeks trying to get the courage to write my own.

A bit about me, in 29 from Kent with 2 children aged 12 and 8, live with my partner (who is as much help as a heated windscreen on a motorbike sometimes) and also work full time.

Haven’t always struggled with my weight when I was younger as I was very active, it wasn’t until I had my children that the weight started to pile on... mix that PCOS and depression you can imagine what happened to my weight!

Have currently tried every diet in the book including meal replacement shakes which I did lose weight on 5st in 4mths then ended up with Gallstones. So that was removed 2 yrs. ago. Also been on Oristat and a few others that doctor has provided but not much luck as have pretty much no metabolism due to PCOS.

I have also been on a weight management programme provided by my local PCT 3 times, the first 2 I never completed due to work commitments, this time I’ve been going for just over a year now. In December last year my doctor referred me for wls at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital which was accepted due to PCOS, BMI, and a few other health issues under Mr Evangelos Efthimiou to have a Gastric Bypass.

Over the past 9 months I have been to London more times than I wish to count for Nurse, Dietician, Psychologists and group sessions for preparation for the surgery, Emotional eating and after surgery.

Last Saturday I had my pre-op assessment and am now awaiting my date. Completely crapping my pants with all the normal emotions running through my brain..... but I cannot wait to get the old me back, be able to run after my kids and the one thing I have missed the most..... getting back on my MTB.

Would love to hear from you all on your experiences the good, the bad and the ugly as I have no one to ask about this.

Also sorry to waffle on, if you have made it this far you need a medal lol :)

Here we go....

Newbie!... Hey all

I'm of to Belgium on Thursday for an MGB ( mini gastric bypass)... Wondering if anyone else on here has had this surgery or is planning to?.. Nervous and excited! :)

Newbie!... Hey all

Advice needed regarding NHS funding please!

Hi everyone, first time posting so please bare with me!

Basically I have been refused funding twice for bariatric surgery (asked for a gastric band) Was told at 42 my bmi wasn't high enough and I'd have to go on a weight management course for 2 years 1st...well, there are no weight management courses available in my area so I've been in limbo! (Already seen a dietician, tried doc prescribed weightloss tabs and joined a gym)

I've now got upto a Bmi of 47 and have also just started being tested for rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia so have had to quit the gym and I'm getting seriously fed up of not being able to do anything with my 3yr old son (I'm only 30 with the body of an overweight 90 yr old lol) As a single parent I really feel guilty about the things my son misses out on so I'm here for your help, is there anything I can do to persuade them to fund my gastric sleeve on the NHS.

Sorry for the long winded thread, need help as I'm going to make an appt to see my gp again tomorrow and I kinda already know it's going to be another no but I'm hoping for a miracle!

Thanks for reading xx

Advice needed regarding NHS funding please!

Hey, I'm Lyndsey. Some advice is appreciated please..

Hi there,

I'm 37 and tired of the yo-yo life with my weight. I got down to my lowest weight last year and then hit a brick wall. I'm gaining weight faster than I ever have and have decided to explore surgical WL options. Hitting 15 stones again and 36.5 BMI.

I have savings to pay for the surgery privately and I'm based in Glasgow. I have an existing "relationship" with Ross Hall hospital and have always had excellent care there, but I'm open to looking around Scotland or perhaps abroad (I am more concerned about going abroad though).

I'm wondering how others have come to the conclusion of which option to go with? Sleeve? Gastric Bypass, Gastric Band etc? What items did you factor into your decision making process around the best option and the best hospital? Any advice for me before I take the plunge? I'm highly motivated to do this soon.

Thanks for your time and support in advance,

Lynds

Hiya everyone,

I'm wondering if someone who's had their op at chicherster could tell me how long they had to wait after their MDT appointment, also how do they tell you about the op? do I have to phone them or do they just write to you with a date? how much notice do you get?

I was so excited after they said yes all the questions I wanted to ask went out of my head.

3 positives of the day

I saw this on a friends social network page & I quite liked it, you post 3 positive things about your day & then others follow suit, so mine today are,

2, I got my surgery date all booked (8th October)

3, I built 2 desks for our daughters

Anything you can donate would be so very much appreciated.

GERD - Ok, reflux for the non-medical-talk people...

Hiya!

Long time no see, but no news is good news, right?

Doing ok, still loving my band. Very slow weight-loss, but I am still getting major restriction so there is absolutely no point in going for another fill. Even though the scales don't seem to be shifting much, my body shape is and I am now a steady 18, slowly shifting towards a 17 1/2, lol.

So, all was well in Paradise, I thought I had it all sussed, and then, bang. For a while now, the reflux has been getting worse. Now, bear in mind I have always been prone to that ever since a child, that I am on Lansoprazole to control it and that it normally works well.

But this is a different beast. Basically, I have some food, doesn't matter what or how little. My band will start gurgling like a waterspout in a summer storm. Then about 1 hour later, sometimes more, I will end up regurgitating the most burning, horrid acid, choking me up, and I have to throw it up, quite often with whatever food had obviously not gone through yet. It's happening practically every night, no matter how much earlier I had eaten. If I doze off during the day, same happens, even if I am not actually lying down. It's driving me slightly potty, to tell you the truth. (and it's very unpleasant to me and others, as you may guess)

any ideas, suggestions?

thanks in advance.

:)

Can't find a thread!!!

Hey, everyone!

Off sick, so vaguebooking, catching up with threads, trawling t'Internet, as you do.

I am trying to find a thread on here, which was a link (stickied, I thought) to someone's description of their band's behaviour and why when there was a problem it was usually down to user's behaviour and not a band malfunction... Any ideas? (To clarify, the post was someone's blog elsewhere, not on here, on here was just the link to it)

Thanks in advance.

Gastric Balloon Roll on 8th October

So it's all booked in, 8th October, I can't believe it, I am super excited. Although still not sure about telling people?????

Our social life is very food based, we get together with friends & eat out a lot & also have lots of BBQ's & social gatherings so I am sure they will notice, maybe I should just tell on an as & when basis.

I am also really excited to hopefully get on the ski slopes without feeling like a yeti, the last few years & have felt really uncomfortable & as in the winter we ski most weekends as it's not far from us but this year i'm sure will be better. Especially the buying of the new clothes,

The big goal is of course to be healthy & happy & for my kids to have their mum around but I also am focusing on us renewing our vows in 2016 & being able to have a dress that does not make me feel like a circus tent.

So only a couple of weeks & i'll be counting every minute :-)

Struggling with band

Hi, I haven't been on this forum for a year and a half! I was banded in October 2012 and for 3 months I did brilliantly with the band and lost 3 stone! Then I got pregnant!! ? , all was well until 16 weeks when I developed gestational diabetes and had to have an emergency defill ?

I managed to only put on a stone during the pregnancy due to medication for the diabetes I think and was back to pre pregnancy weight a w

eek after the birth but then all hell broke lose!

The past year the band has been too loose so I've eaten everything in sight! Then too tight so I couldn't eat at all, then too loose again! I got in the habit of eating slider foods when other foods were a struggle and now my son is just over a year old and I'm back to my start weight ?

I've just had a fill on Friday and to be honest I had too much put in and can only have thin liquids, I'm desperate for this band to work again for me as my cover runs out next month and I'll be paying £80 per fill then ?

I'm so fed up, feel like a fool for doing so well and then gaining it all back, I feel like all my friends who know I have a band are laughing at me! Any advise welcome ?

Struggling with band

Hello from me

A big hello from me. After much research & talking with my husband I have finally settled on having a gastric balloon, the 12 month spatz one. I could not be any happier.

Chatting with the hospital we are hoping I will be in within the next 3 weeks. Thankfully I know the surgical team as I have been there before. I had 40cm overhang on my tummy removed & 7lb breast reduction, both of these have enabled me to move around much more & now I go to the gym & attend fitness classes which before was too hard especially with my gigantic breasts. Now they are lovely,

So I am currently a stay at home mum hoping to return to work next year now my 2 are in school. We live in Italy, the northern part near the lakes. Our girls are age 7 and 3.

I don't have the best relationship with food but it is getting better & with the support of my friends & husband it is easier. But now sitting at 16st 10lb I feel i need to go down a different path.

I have set myself short & long term goals, so fingers crossed by the middle of october I will have my balloon.

Looking forward to reading about other peoples journeys & sharing mine.

Op booked 2nd October!!

Hi guys

I had my appointment today at THG in Cambridge my mum and dad came with me whilst other half looked after my two bubas, I see Mr Martin Richardson. Whilst sitting behind my ipad screen I'm not afraid I've been battling the horrid depression for nearly two years now and I could feel it creeping up on me again where I wasn't wanting to get out of bed and enjoy life, I struggle walking out the door and being with family it's got too the point where I won't open the door to people or talking to people as I feel like I'm being judged constantly i get extremely anxious all due to my weight...... Anyway I've kind of gone away from what I'm trying to say... My wonderful mum booked my appointment for my op which is on the 2nd October if anyone out there is at the same stage or a little in front I'd love to hear how your first week went and what I'm to expect

Sorry for the waffling first post never done this before

Got My Date For My Sleeve

I want to thank you all, because I don't think I would have got this far without you.

After my first appointment in July this year, which was terrible, I really thought I had blown my change of this ever happening.

But I have read all your posts, taken them in and wrote them down.

This time I went in knowing what I wanted, stuck to my diet and yesterday afternoon I got the shock of my life.

Mr Balchandra said "I could have my Sleeve on the 30th October " I am over the moon. I came away with my Pre Op Diet which is 800 / 1000 cal food diet, he did say after the operation I would need an injection everyday for 10 days, when I come home so that will be fun.

Op booked 2nd October!!!

hi all!

:wave_cry::wave_cry: I am obviously new here. I am Carolyn and I live in South Wales. I have been trying to diet for years and years and have diabetes, cholesterol, hypertension amongst other things.

My GP has always been loath to refer me for bariatric surgery, but recently I managed to get a referral. I have now had a letter telling me I will need to go for assessment (Morriston Hospital) and I am worried about what I need to say to persuade them :sigh:

Can any of you lovely people help me out please? x

hi all!

Band over Bypass??

Hi, I wondered if anyone had had a revision of band over the bypass?

I have had a lot of weight gain and am so scared about it spiralling out of control again, I have got an appointment on Wednesday to talk about it with my surgeon.....just looking for any folk that might have had this done??

1st appointment: Ashford Jan 5th

Hello you guys,

EDIT: Not the 15th - the 5th of Jan!! Read the letter wrong the first time. This sums me up well! lol.

I'm posting again because I finally got my first appointment in the post: Jan 15 2015 at the Ashford hospital. I'm surprised because i thought they'd refer me to Chichester as it's nearer (right? confused here, my mum seems to think that they are one and the same, but pretty sure Chichester is in West Sussex and Ashford in London!)

Anyone else going to that orientation? do drop me a line. it does seem awfully far in the future.. I'm sure people on here have already been through the process at Ashford too, what's the usual process and what are the waiting times like? What procedure did you have? How long between orientation and surgery? Not that i want to rush ahead and not do it all properly, etc.. i just want to know!

Thanks to anyone that can advise me here.

11th October

Morning all,

I live in Essex and am booked for gastric bypass for the 11th. I'm 37, 5'8", 20st with a BMI of 41.

Okay, my concern is this...

...Based on the restrictive stomach size, will the procedure "change my life"... Now, what I mean by that is "will the procedure focus my entire life around food"... A strange question perhaps, but whilst my current choices are poor, food isn't on my mind 24 hrs a day.

Secondly, does it ruin your social life... The inability to socialise frightens the hell out of me!

And lastly, despite my rotund size, I did lose the weight in 2010 and climbed Mount Everest- something I want to do again. On the mountain you need to eat for energy... Will this procedure prevent that?

Any support would be appreciated... I am absolutely bricking it for the op :-/

post-op ins and outs of different surgeries?

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the differences between the different weight loss surgeries please.

I don't mean the actual surgeries as I have read loads about them but does anyone know which surgery is best for what type of person? As in overeating, sweet tooth, self discipline and all that. I'm trying to work out which surgery would be best for me.

I was originally thinking I wanted the band as it seems a bit less invasive (read less scary) but after reading people's diaries etc on here I am unsure if that really is the right option for me. I eat too much, too often and all the wrong things plus I have a sweet tooth (more like 10 sweet teeth actually). Also my self discipline could be a lot better and I hate excercise. My BMI is just under 50 so I have quite a lot to get rid of.

post-op ins and outs of different surgeries?

Almost there

I had my MDT yesterday and although it wasn't what I'd call a fun day, I was offered a gastric bypass at the end of it.

I have some stuff I need to do now like start eating throughout the day not just evenings, I have to give up fizzy and junk. I also have to start working on coping strategies and some other issues i have. The psychiatrist said I need to start a diary/journal with some goals that I have because after surgery when my head is catching up with my weight loss I might not remember them. I was going to start a blog but thinking about it i'd quite like something I can write in and do almost like a scrap book thing.

I don't really feel excited or anything like that, actually more than anything I feel worried that they will change their mind. Guess it will sink in eventually.

I'm booked in on Monday to have a Gastric Bypass at Musgrove Park eeeek!

Has anyone else had surgery here? X

Newbie.... Hello ;)

Welcome Miss Brynn Veronica!!

So she's here!!! Born 9-17-14 @ 11:49 AM. 7 Lbs 6 oz!! She was taken to Children's Hospital about 2 hours after birth, and had surgery Thursday morning (I got to have her vaginally, so they let me be discharged early so I could be there when she got her surgery). Her surgery took just about 2 hours, and docs said it couldn't have gone better!! It has officially been called a "Sacral Meningocele". When she was born, the defect was 75% skin covered. She came out kicking and crying, and moving everything down to her little pigs! Have had no need to to cath or anything (except 1 time after surgery yesterday, which they told me they might have to do to the anesthesia). No need for shunt as of yet, but ultrasounds after surgery of her head were as normal as normal could be (ultrasounds of her kidneys and bladder have all been good too)! She is still moving her legs and toes and responding to touch after the surgery! Just wanted to share this new little princess with you!! Hoping and praying that all she has after this rough start to life is a cool scar to talk about (although if anything comes up, I know it's God's plan, and I'm ok with that too :o)

Help! I've had band 13 months and everything went great up until 8 days ago. Everything is getting stuck, water juice food everything! I'm not in pain when I don't eat or drink. It starts as soon as I swallow anything! I contacted my provider and am awaiting email back. I know they will say that it sounds like I need a de-fill. But why on earth all of a sudden when everything was totally fine, then to nothing going down. I tried fizzy drink to see if it was something stuck but the pain of it! Any advice???

Tears - caught me!

Am normally quite an un-emotional type. Have researched everything for my WLS and my sleeve op is on Sunday and I can't wait to start my new life.

So why have I just spent the last hour sobbing quite uncontrollably to myself and then to my daughter (who I told I was upset over last nights Eastenders) ???? Caught me completely off guard and was all set off by me not knowing what to cook the children for dinner!

Please tell me others have got emotional pre-op??!

Tears - caught me!

Which anti-sickness pills were you prescribed post op?

Hi guys, I've been prescribed a pill called Prochlorperazine Buccal by my GP because of the nausea I've been experiencing since having my sleeve in August.

Unfortunately, they don't work for me as they have to be pushed underneath the top lip and the upper gum and the taste as they slowly dissolve makes me feel very sick!

So, I was wondering what you were given and if they were any good?

My Weekly weigh ins

I thought I should start my own weigh in thread. Though my aim is actually to keep myself away from the scales for at least 2-3 days at a time (I am weighing myself daily atm :break_diet:) But then I am loosing weight daily since I am only 4 days post-op.

Well at the beginning of it all I was

133.5kg = 294lb = 21st

Day of the surgery (after 2 weeks of pre-op) I was

126.2kg = 278lb = 19st 9lb

This morning (4 days post op) I was

122.1 = 269lb = 19st 2lb

Now my goal is not to weigh myself until Saturday :character00116: It seems to me that at the moment it's harder than loosing a pound :p

Binge/emotional eating disorders treatment and WLS

This subject has come up a few times during discussions so I thought I would open a separate thread and try to answer all the questions at once.

I have been diagnosed with an eating disorder about 3 years ago (though obviously I have had it for much longer than that). Some specialists put it as binge eating disorder, others as atypical bulimia. I personally think I suffer from emotional overeating with some binge episodes. But emotional eating is not treated on NHS, so I didn't object the doctors' opinion.

I started treatment almost straight away but very soon realised that nobody (apart from my dietitian who was brilliant) really knew how to treat me. Only a year later I discovered that I am not alone here and overall, unfortunately, there's a general agreement (even among industry experts) that Eating Disorders services are not good at dealing with binge or emotional eating. They try to apply the same techniques as with bulimia (and even anorexia) but come to a conclusion that they are useless with overeating because it's a completely different mindset to binge-purge pattern.

However, in the last couple of years a new approach started to emerge. It is more suitable for binge/emotional eaters BUT it is NOT aimed at weight loss. Worse than that - weight gain is common. And this is exactly what happened to me. To be fair the amount you put on is not huge and then the gain stops altogether.

This method is effective in a way that it stops binges, helps to find solution to emotional problems but it's a drop in the ocean if you are still dangerously overweight and your health is under threat. Sooner or later you NEED to start weight loss program and no matter what kind of program it is it contradicts the eating disorder therapy. The whole idea of the method is based upon belief (and I agree with it) that deprivation (while on a diet) leads to binges (yo-yo dieting is the direct result of it). Instead they teach view food as your tool to become healthy (it turns out that nearly all binge eaters see it as their enemy), learn to cook, enjoy your food, to savour each bite of it.

I believe they teach eventually how to go for healtheir options, make portions smaller and stop snacking but even after 18 months of therapy I didn't get to that point.

HOWEVER it would not be fair to say that it was all in vain. I have learned a huge deal about eating in general and more importantly I have learned a lot about myself. I have found out what triggeres MY binges, what is MY response to emotional issues and what helps ME to avoid overeating. My dietitian gave me a few useful tips and techniques and gave me confidence (many of those I have recently found in Jenny Radcliff's book about bariatric surgery Cut to Size). I have learned to accept my disorder as part of me, as something, that is unfortunately is never going to go away but I can certainly learn to live with it.

As for WLS, eating disorder is one of the obesticles and at the same time one of the reasons why people get the surgery. It can both help to battle it but it can also worsen it. That's at least what I was told. I was also told that they wouldn't consider surgery until I am out active phase of binge eating for at least 6 months. They recommended bypass as it helps to change attitude towards food (through dumping, etc) but I got a sleeve at the end.

Hi I'm Marc having a mini gastric bypass 15/10/14 struggling to use this site. So short msg to see if it works.i spent an hr typing the last one only 4 it to say u haven't logged in???

Please help me to love my SLEEVE

When I started my WLS journey a few years ago I set my heart on sleeve only to be told later by all 3 specialists I'd seen that since I have a history of eating disorders that bypass is the only option for me as it retrains brain into eating healthy food and a right amount. I had done a lot of research into that and totally agreed with bypass. Moreover I met a few people at my local support group who had been struggling with sleeve (no weight loss, depression, etc). Well, I hands down i was bypass all the way for me... until a few hours after the surgery when I was told that all they could do was a sleeve...

I can't say that my dreams were shattered because I was just really happy that (a) I was alive (b) it was all over. But to be talked out of having a sleeve at first because it was no good for me and then get it... well, I am just not as hopeful as before.

I fear that I am going to stretch my stomach back, that I won't have any dumping syndrome (they say they don't usually get it with sleeve), that my appetite won't go. because at the moment I do feel hungry both in my tummy and in my head. Eating is painful at times but nothing I can't cope with if I am desperate to eat. That scares me. I have given up so much for this surgery and now I just can't afford to fail.

What to believe..?

Hi - me again... :wave_cry:

Last week i called St Richards to find out how long i had to wait for my next appointment and the lovely lady said that i would get a letter in the next week or two, so that was last Tuesday... as of yet, nothing has come through, although I am aware that it has only been a week. Anyway, due to my being so impatient i decided to call again this morning, just to make sure the story is consistent...

Another lady answered the phone and she said that i was still way off the top, and can only expect a letter around November TIME - the other lady said that i would have my appointment at the latest by early November... WTH?

Ugh i couldn't even argue because when she answered the phone i made out like I hadn't actually spoken to anyone before about it. :cry:I don't know what to do and i think this waiting might actually send me into a nervous breakdown.

Any suggestions? Wait again until next Tuesday and call again, stating that i waited two weeks and nothing has happened, or just keep pestering them.

Marshmallow Barium Swallow

Hello my dears. I have a lot to tell you but for now can I ask if anyone has had the above test done please?

I am set to have this very soon but if the truth be told I am terrified. As you know I can barely eat and the thought of eating something that resembles bread just doesn't bare thinking about.

Do I have to really gulp it down (as with the liquid Barium) in order for the test to work? Does it have the same chalky taste as the liquid Barium? How long is the test?

What age were you when you had the sleeve surgery.

Facebook Bypass Group

Hi all!

Not sure I'm in the right section - but anyway.. Is anyone else on Facebook Gastric Bypass group? I'm so worried about surgery after I read the comments on there, so many have complications and wish the surgery never happened..

I wonder as the majority are American - if it's an American thing?

Maybe it's just me!

C-Section or Not?

So I pretty much don't have much of a say in the matter since using a GC. She is going the VB route. Worried the sac will rupture. Our baby is being induced this Wednesday. They also want medical students there to show what SB is. Concerned that they will interfere in the care and treatment of our baby. Again no say. Any thoughts? or am I just a worried mom. Thanks!

C-Section or Not?

Where to start.

Well its been a long journey for me... I am 33 been up and down weight wise had a double masectomy and hysterectomy before iw as 30 and now I am so ashamed to say I am 19st 4 lb (thats the first time I have written it down))

I have no support from anyone here however I have made the decision I need a push I am a bit afraid of more surgery but am thinking of the balloon I am not sure what else to do or where to go or who to speak to

Does anyone have any advice?

Where to start.

Nervous about endoscopy

I got a letter a while ago saying I'd been approved by the mdt and listed for endoscopy. Now got my appointment through for 3rd oct. I'm really nervous about it and questioning the whole idea of surgery.

How have people found the endoscopy? Is it better to go for sedation or throat spray?

Constant sickness

I'm 3 weeks post op and I feel sick all the time :( I was wondering if this was normal? Any suggestion as to how to get rid of it and if it is normal, how long does it go on for? It's really getting me down

Saying Goodbye to the Booty - Band Edition

So today was the first day of my pre-op diet. So I thought I would start a diary to chart my journey.

My Op is on 28th September and I'm going with Healthier Weight (HW).

In the past the most I have lost is 7 stone but I only kept it off for a year.

I'm hoping that the band will help me keep off any weight loss.

My weight to start was 18.11 and I've lost 8lb from eating less over the last few weeks in preparation.

I was told I needed to lose 13lbs before the op so hopefully I will get there no problem.

The last surgery I had was as a baby. I've never even broken a bone so I'm nervous about going under the knife but I see the as a last option so I need to do what is necessary to keep myself alive and even prosperous as I head into my middle age.

Mdt on friday

My MDT is Friday and I'm so nervous I feel like cancelling the stupid thing!

I no I'm going to get tongue tied talking to everyone and make an ass of myself and they're going to think that I haven't tried hard enough to lose weight and I no if they do say anything like that I won't say anything to contradict them

I wish I was braver with things

Bypass in 2 weeks ... what should I be buying now to prepare for it and pre-op diet?

Hi

I am due to have my bypass in two weeks. What kind of things should I be buying ready for coming out of hospital so I'm prepared? (such as tablets, pain killers, food?)

Possibly a really stupid question but I haven't had any guidance from the hospital yet .. other than a pre-op diet sheet through the post.

Also, I start the pre-op diet in a few days - the leaflet I got says I can have veg soup once per day (home-made). Can I use stock cubes, seasoning etc? Any great soup recipes? :D

Thanks

Billie's Diary. Good Things Come To Those Who Wait?

Hello everybody.

I thought I would start a diary for a few reasons

To write down my feelings through the process

To maybe help people along their journey

So my story

My names Billie :wavey:

I'm 23

I live in Essex

I work with children

I live with my fiance of 7 years.

Weight 23 stone 7 lbs. Height 5 foot 11. Size 24

So my lifetime battle with my weight brings me here.

The last time I remember being not over weight was when I was 16 I was a happy size 14-16.

Over the years there has been many things that I believe have contributed to my weight gain. Passing my driving test, getting lazy, moving out, getting comfortable with partner etc.

I suffer with depression which I also believe contributed to weight gain.

SO back to here and now. Only look forward !!

After trying every diet known to man I have come to the conclusion that i need some help.

Timeline so far

April 2014, I went to the doctor and asked for a gastric band

May 2014, Doctor wanted me to see a dietitian

June 2014, Saw dietitian went back to docs

July 2014, After a lot of phone calls to doctor ans PCT trying to find out the correct information it was found out I needed to do the tier 3 weight management program first.

August 2014 Doc send referral for weight management tier 3

September 2014.

I had a email from more life (company who provides the tier 3) on tuesday with a link that took me to their site with some questions to answer.

On Thursday I had a phone assessment and she rang me back 10 mins later and said she has a program starting MONDAY !!!

So I start tier 3 this Monday YAY !!

Its every monday for 14 weeks then a few months after,

I will write in this diary every week and tell you all what its like, so anyone else waiting to start it will know what its all about !!

Sorry if I bore anyone lol

I am 6 months in now and have never had this much trouble so all your comments would be great. Xx

Question

This might seem odd but I'm 5/6 days post op and I seem to constantly feel hungry/like my belly needs to rumble. But I am not craving foods. Has anyone else experienced this and could it be anything else!?

Thanks!

hi there

buy the power of google i found you guys a few weeks ago and have been reading up on spina bifida occulta. i have had some problems since the age of about 10 years old but never really understood what it was all about.

when i was about 10 my mum noticed i was not walking quite as i used to and was limping a little and not putting the heal of my foot down properly when walking...thats when it all started. i remember going to the docs and various hospitals a good few times and different tests being done. i had no other problems apart from my legs ached like hell (still do)Turned out my left leg was longer than my right by about 2.5cm....long story short i had pins put in my left knee to try and let the right leg catch up and be a more equal length . the pins were in for a few years i guess and now my RIGHT leg is now the longer one ha ha ...they got that a little wrong!...i have a raise inside my shoe to balance things out a bit better now.

i have generally always suffered with pain in my back and legs that ache often and easily but ive never really questioned it..i was only 10...had a couple of operations and that was that....ive put up with the back and leg pain ...it doesnt take much at all for me to have sciatica / hamstring pain and ive had months off work due to me thinking im ok to do certain D.I.Y jobs etc...over do it and hey presto i cant walk far or that well....i dont walk that well at the best of times and much prefer the pushbike or car...walking is tough on the legs hurting and back if i go TOO far

i hurt my back a few months ago and during our chat i was talking about my medical history and he just mentioned spina bifida ...i thought wonder what that is and found here. I had a follow up app today as i have never been told any of this and "apparently " my parents were not aware...even though it states it in doctors letters...maybe they were just internal letters and they were not told?...anyway...i go there today...he was running behind but said ive got all your records lets have a read through it to put your mind at rest....all i did was get shown too letters ( was a Big file) and asked do you have your phone on you...you can take a picture of the letters if you wish!....im still none the wiser really.....it does state spinal abnormality and spina bifida occulta.

this is what it says ...hope it makes sense to some of you !?

this is from one doctor to another after some kind of test......

we know there is a spinal abnormality and you have also commented that the bladder diverticulum and thickened bladder wall surgests some functional disturbance related to dysraphysm. ( i remember my mum telling me my bladder does not empty fully but thats about it )

in another letter it says....

there is a spina bifida occulta of the first sacral section with a poorly defined spinous proccess of L4 and there is a slight thoracolumbar scoliosis convex to the left pedicle at L1 however the water soluble myelogram was normal and the GSF protein was 35mm/100ml ...??

radiographs show a defect in the lamina of S1 with widening of the inter-pedicula distance at L5-S1??

Does any of this make any sense to you as All i have ever been told is my bladder does not empty fully and you need a operation to sort your legs out.....i do find it hard to believe my parents were not told...or i was not either really?

I know i am still very lucky and things could always be worse but i feel pretty low at the moment ;-( ...

god im really waffling on about stuff now are nt i ...Sorry....

Hi.

I suppose I'm going for revision surgery the first week in October.

I say suppose as I had a gastric band in France in 2004 and it was best thing I ever I lost over 11 stone but then I made mistake of having it removed as I thought i could do it myself.

I regained most of my weight then in 2010 about 6-8 months after having band removed I went for a wrap in Prague . ( biggest waist of money ever) I didn't loose a lb in fact I gained more weight then in 2012 I went to Belgium and had another band. This was going great until I got a vomiting bug and my local hospital removed it when it didn't need to be removed.

So here I am today. 23stone. Heaviest ever! And I am going for the ultimate weight loss tool ( well it is to me) I am having a gastric bypass in France in October. In nervous as it's my 4th operation so it can't be good for my body but at same time I can't go on like this I have no life. I have pains everywhere my knees can just about carry me.

I can't afford to have it done here in Ireland and there is no option to have it done public so this is my only option.

Has anyone been to le harve in France and had a bypass.

I still have a part wrap (it was never done properly) so the revision is from a wrap to bypass.

Hopefully this is it.

Thinking

Hello

I am Debbie and I am thinking about and researching a gastric sleeve. I have a bmi of around 53 so will try the NHS first. If not I will fund it myself so am curious to see what people are saying. I currently live in Swindon but will be moving to Plymouth around November.

What's the best protein powder

Just looking in advance of my op, so I can get some shopping in etc.

What have people found to be the best protein powder for adding to milk shakes etc. ??

What's the best protein powder

No pre-op diet

I'm not sure what to make of this. I saw my consultant 2 days ago and am due my operation on sept 21st - but apparently he's not a fan of pre-op diets at all unless you're over 250kg!!

It feels so strange when I see of other pre -ops diet being so strict!

Handheld blender vs food processor?

Hello lovelies! Sorry if this is a silly question :)

I am preparing for my bypass on the 16th, and i have a food processor with a blender. Is it worth getting one of those handheld blenders as well or should i be ok with the food processor? It has a small container that can be used to blend small amounts of things, but was wondering if the handheld one will be more useful. After your op, which did you use and if you had both items, which did you use the most?

Thanks in advance :)

Help

Hi all,

In need of some help!!

I'm 8 weeks post op and now on solids.. 3-4 tbs per meal. If I overeat I'm sick (3-4 times per week).. It was nearly every day a couple of weeks ago. I get nausea and delayed dumping also if I make the wrong choices..

But that doesn't seem to stop me making the wrong choices.. I've lost 4 stone in 4 months and doing really well, but I know this will stall and I want to lose another 10. I'm exercising well and feel great.. So, why are old habits creeping back.

Should I go back to my team and ask for more help, although I'm beginning to feel a failure again. My husband doesn't understand me and I don't either. I don't want to be shouted at.

I know I should record everything I eat and that's maybe where I should start.. It's almost as if now that I'm back on solids, my old habits are creeping back. I'm terrified of getting a hernia.

I'd love some pearls of wisdom.. Please. I know there are many experienced bypassers out there and also second timers, like me, who have also had the band.

Thank you in advance.

I'm absolutely gutted with what's happened at Manchester dogs home tonight. I can't understand why a 15 year old boy would take pleasure in torching a home for abandoned animals. If he was my kid, I'd disown him
